Clopidogrel 75mg (Generic Plavix)

Blocks the P2Y12 receptor on platelets so they can't clump into clots. In the CAPRIE trial (19,185 patients with prior stroke, MI, or PAD), clopidogrel cut the annual risk of stroke, heart attack, or vascular death by 8.7% vs aspirin.

Why Patients Choose

One 75mg tablet, once a day, with or without food

Generic of Plavix

same active ingredient, ~90% cheaper than brand

In CAPRIE: 5.32% annual event rate on clopidogrel vs 5.83% on aspirin (prior stroke/MI/PAD patients)

In CURE (12,562 patients with unstable angina or non-STEMI): clopidogrel + aspirin cut cardiovascular death, MI, or stroke from 11.4% to 9.3% over 9 months

No INR monitoring, no dietary restrictions, no weekly blood draws

Clinical Evidence

CHARISMA

CHARISMA (NEJM 2006): No benefit over aspirin alone in primary prevention — clopidogrel is for patients with established disease, not healthy adults All figures are from the published trial population

7%
CAPRIE (Lancet 1996): 8.7% relative risk reduction in stroke
20%
CURE (NEJM 2001): 20% relative risk reduction in CV death/MI

How

Platelets are the cells that form blood clots.

They have a receptor called P2Y12 that, when activated, makes them stick together. Clopidogrel permanently blocks that receptor for the life of the platelet (~7–10 days). Fewer sticky platelets = fewer clots in your stents, coronary arteries, or brain vessels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, modestly. CURE showed major bleeding rose from 2.7% to 3.7%. Tell your dentist and surgeon before any procedure.

About 2–14% of people are. If you've had genotyping or stent thrombosis on clopidogrel, our MD can discuss prasugrel or ticagrelor instead.

Omeprazole and esomeprazole can reduce clopidogrel activation. Pantoprazole is the safer pairing — flag your PPI in intake.

Yes. FDA bioequivalence requires the generic to deliver 80–125% of brand AUC and Cmax. Plavix went generic in 2012.

If your cardiologist already told you aspirin alone isn't enough — stent, recent MI, ACS — this is why.
